How Playa Flamingo Got Its Name
Unlike many place names in Costa Rica, “Flamingo” is not Spanish, and the exact origin of the name is not definitively documented. Local tradition, however, offers a few possible explanations.
One enduring theory is that early English-speaking visitors or residents may have associated the area with pink flamingos—perhaps inspired by the presence of roseate spoonbills, whose vivid pink coloring and elegant silhouette can easily be mistaken, from a distance, for flamingos. Seen in nearby mangroves and coastal wetlands, these striking birds may have helped inspire a name that endured.
Whether rooted in observation, impression, or local storytelling, the name Flamingo has become inseparable from the identity of the bay and the community that surrounds it.
